A short introduction on the types of nail files available and on the art of nail filing

We asked a few of our top nail technicians to explain the best way to file nails. Below are their tips and tricks for that perfect nail - Every time!

Files

The higher the grit number, the softer the file. The lower the grit, the coarser the file. 80 & 100 files are coarse. Then you have 100, 180 and 240's which are a medium-coarse grit. A 600 grit file is fine. There are also files available for buffing and shining the nail. (Backscratchers white & gray).

The Basics of Filing Shape in Nails

The "trick" with filing shape is how you hold your file (angle) and what perspectives you look at to check the shape. For rounded nails: Hold the file flatter as you file underneath (bevel) the free edge.

(180 degrees is perfectly flat under the nail)For square: Hold it straight on (perpendicular) to the

free edge. The "flatter" your file, the rounder the nail. (Straight on, dead square is a 0 degree -i.e.: none! - tilt of the file!) Practice this shaping technique by varying the angle on the file to produce different shapes of nails.Whatever angle you hold the file at in relation to the nail as you shape, just be sure it's the same angle on all 10 nails. This will also help to keep the shape the same on both sides of the nail (left and right). Watch out for "drag" on the side you are handed. You will tend to file heavier on one side than the other, causing lopsided nails. Check this by looking at (and re-filing as needed) the nails from another angle (such as hold the hand up in front of you to see it, see "views.” Make a habit of checking the nail from 7 different vantage points when checking the shaping (identical of course) and the contouring (think almonds here!)

The 7 usual views of the nail to consider are

1) Our usual filing view (overall picture),

2) Left side lateral (landscape contouring and arches),

3) Right side (landscape contouring and arches),

4) Down the barrel ("C" Curve),

5) Held up in front of you forwards (shaping and proportionality),

6) Backwards view or the backside of the hand and nails (evenness and proportionality),

7) Clients view, turn the hand around to see what they see from their perspective (overall picture again!). Consistent and constant use of these 7 steps can eventually train your eye to see "most" common and obvious flaws from just one or two angles instead of needing to see all 7.

Clarification on a few of the angles

#5) Held up in front of you forwards (shaping and proportionality), Hand is held with knuckles facing you (the tech) and palm facing client, fingers pointed skyward.

#6) Backwards view or the backside of the hand and nails (evenness and proportionality),

This is the reverse of #5; Palm toward tech, knuckle side to client, fingers still pointing skyward

(clients elbow resting on table)

#7) Clients view: turn the hand around to see what they see from their perspective (overall picture again!). This is similar to #5 except it's like looking down the barrel of the nails from the cuticle end, not the free edge end. Palm is toward table, knuckle side up, nails pointing toward client, client elbow and wrist turned around toward tech. This is the lying down or flat view of #5 (while 5 is the standing up or vertical view.)

Choosing Nail Shape

Choosing a shape is a compromise between many factors. Client preference is just one of them. Clients many times will unknowingly ask for shapes that may be incompatible with their lifestyles or not flattering to their hands. It is our job as the professional to educate clients on other factors that will affect the final decision on shape, such as lifestyle, habits, hobbies, nail health, length the client wants to wear nails, her nail and finger width, length, etc. Generally the most flattering shape for fingernails will be shape or free edge that somewhat mirrors their lanula (moon), which will tend to be somewhat squoval for most (some rounder, some squarer). But of course, squarer tends to be stronger. Length can be a factor too, as some clients see shaping of the free edge to include all the sidewalls in the free edge, too. Let them know that "pointy" tapered nails are not durable. Rounded nails get rounded at the free edge only. By educating clients on what shapes will flatter their hands and be the most durable, you can generally compromise on a shape that works out well for them.

Social media posts should entice your customers to crave more interaction and communication. Your content needs to be engaging and interesting to those who are going to read it and should provide them with some new source of information.

Post facts, information or photos that your target audience would find appealing and that are in line with your brand image. For example, if your hair salon has a young, fun, modern feel, your posts should match this tone. On the other hand if your brand has more of a vintage, old school theme you may consider posting pictures that follow this idea or tweet about how your business is for the woman that loves classic beauty.

Sample of engaging photo using products of interest

You should post pictures that your demographic will respond to and react to in a positive way. All pictures, captions or tweets should match the tone of your brand and be in line with your target age group. Before you post anything on social media, make sure it is something you feel your customer would want to talk about or be interested in.

Nail salons should post content such as nail health and beauty tips or the latest how-to guides or engaging content related to your business that is available in a short, easy to read format. Examples would be an intriguing photo with a simple caption, a short list of beauty tips, a fun beauty vine video or an infographic. These types of content are interactive and appealing to your target audience.

Facebook provides the perfect way for you to share your services, post photos of your unique nail art or create contests or giveaways to promote brand loyalty and spread awareness of your brand.

In today’s Facebook era, it is rare that you would find a customer who isn’t a member of the social media site. Therefore, it is the perfect medium to communicate with customers. Here are two tips for marketing your nail salon on Facebook:

1. Write relevant posts that engage consumers - Write posts that customers want to respond to and will enjoy giving their opinion on. An example of this would be to ask questions like “Summer has officially begun! What will be your nail style cut of choice?” This type of conversation starter is relevant, personalized, and something that majority of salon-goers would enjoy discussing.

2. Post pictures, and lots of them! - One of the best ways businesses can use Facebook is as a visual medium. Your nail salon should be showcasing the work that it is most proud of. Whether that be fun holiday-themed manicures or gorgeous bridal party nail looks. Pictures provide an outlet to show what you can do. As a bonus, pictures are engaged with more than text-only posts, in fact 120% more , therefore these can also help to bring new referrals through your front doors as your current customers share the photo with their
own personal networks.
Answer Key

1. False. Some bacteria are beneficial and even help with things such as digestion.

2. True. Clients or inspectors may ask to see the log as evidence that proper cleaning is taking place. Be ready to answer any questions they may have about the process.
date/time mixed to track it. And, yes, pre-cleaning is required.

14. c. As long as the item is appropriate for home use there is nothing wrong with gifting it to the
client instead of throwing it away. Under no circumstances should it be reused.
Following Proper Procedures
A successful and responsible salon needs to do all it can to prevent fungal, skin, and nail infections in the course of their business routines. When we think of effective methods for controlling the spread of potentially infectious organisms, we often focus on sanitizing, disinfection and sterilization. The fact is that thorough cleaning procedures can have a huge impact on an effective infection control program. Chemically eliminating infectious organisms is an important goal, but cleaning and rinsing can create a safer environment by removing organisms from items, reducing their population to below infectious levels, or exposing them to the efficacious effects of the biocides you are using. Effective infection prevention requires that each component of the process must be thorough.
The use of soap and water before appointments is one of the most common techniques for preventing infections during salon treatments. Washing hands in front of customers is optional, but may assist with forming positive impressions by allowing customers to see the methods being used to ensure proper cleanliness. Some nail technicians prefer to use gloves during service, which is not required in most states, but creates and additional barrier of safety.

Cleaning Implements
Cleanliness of equipment and implements is the most important step to preventing nail infections and cross contamination. Tools/implements such as nail clippers, cuticle cutters, files, etc. should be cleaned and disinfected using an EPA Registered Hospital Level Disinfectant that is effective against Hepatitis B or is Tuberculocidal. Backscratchers Salon Aseptic System with Cavicide is E. P. A registered and is a convenient, ready-to-use disinfectant that is effective against TB, HBV, HCV, viruses (hydrophilic and lilophilic), bacteria (including MSRA and VRE) and fungi.

In All Circumstances

Any employee who has contact with any tools or equipment in any way should be thoroughly trained on the proper cleaning and care of the tools with which they will interact. Any employee who is not sufficiently trained in the care of the tools should avoid interacting with them unless supervised to reduce the potential for infectious material to be transmitted. Before any clean item is handled by an employee, they should sanitize their hands following the instructions above to ensure that no new infectious material is applied to the tool after its cleaning. All tools should be stored in appropriate containers away from contaminants that can cause a nail infection or cross contamination.

Over the years, we have read stories of nail salons that have used unclean implements or have a dirty salon. Not only can salons be fined for these violations, but they are also putting their clients at risk. A nail station, pedicure chair, and implements must be sanitized, disinfected or sterilized before each client. It is important to follow your stat's law regarding salon sanitation. If you are unsure of the law or are curious if there have been any changes in 2016, CLICK HERE.

Can't Keep the differences between the three straight?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) these are the definitions:

Sanitation*: To wash with soap and water and to remove dirt and debris and to reduce the levels of microorganisms to a safe, acceptable level. Before implements or equipment can be disinfected, they must first be sanitized.
*Generally accepted definition

Disinfection: The use of a chemical procedure that eliminates virtually all recognized pathogenic microorganisms but not necessarily all microbial forms (e.g., endospores). (Microorganisms are living organisms - good and bad - that are invisible to the naked eye.) All implements and equipment used on clients must be disinfected before each use.

Sterilization: The use of physical or chemical procedure to destroy all microbial life, including highly resistant bacterial endospores (Endospores are thick-walled bodies formed within the vegetative cells of certain bacteria. They are able to withstand adverse environmental conditions for prolonged periods.) Sterilization is not required in the salon.

Answer Key

1. B. An autoclave is an apparatus that uses superheated steam under high pressure to sterilize instruments.

2. A. Porous items are made of cloth, wood, or other absorbent materials. Porous items include most nail files,
manicure sticks, cotton, paper mats, towels, and buffer blocks. Porous items that would be damaged or
destroyed by cleaning or have been contaminated by broken skin, blood, or other bodily fluids or infections
must be disposed of. See answer number three for cleaning guidelines for porous items that can be saved.

3. A. Porous items used on healthy nails can be cleaned by manually brushing and removing all debris after
each use, then disinfected by immersing in 70% or higher isopropyl or ethyl alcohol or 10% bleach solution.
Towels, chamois, buffing bits, and similar items can be cleaned in a washing machine with regular detergent.

4. B. Non-porous items must always be disinfected. To clean a non-porous item, clean all visible debris then
completely immerse the tool for 10 minutes in an EPA-registered disinfectant, bleach solution,( 1 part bleach
to 9 parts water), or 70% or higher isopropyl or ethyl alcohol.

5. B. False. All implements (including those that a client brings or leaves in the salon), equipment, and materials
that come into contact with a client must be sanitized and disinfected prior to service.

6. C. Clean with an antiseptic and bandage the cut. If blood or body fluid comes in contact with any salon
surface, put on protective disposable gloves and clean it with an EPA-registered hospital liquid disinfectant
or 10% bleach solution.

7. B. Proper ventilation is essential for client and worker safety and comfort. A local source capture ventilation
system will eliminate vapors and dust in your breathing zone, and it also helps to wear an N-95-certified dust
mask. Never light candles where nail products are used and do not permit smoking inside the salon.

8. B. False. Spray disinfectants are for cleaning surfaces only and are not adequate for disinfecting tools and
pedicure equipment in the salon. Tools require complete immersion in liquid disinfectant for 10 minutes.

9. B. Most states require Salon Safety Data sheets to be available upon request by an inspector; a fine may be
issued to salons that do not have them.

10. A. Whirlpool foot spas and air-jet pedicure basins must be cleaned after every client.

Nail Salon Sanitation Requirements

Salon sanitation is one of the most important aspects of the nail salon industry. Proper sanitation prevents the spread of fungal and bacterial diseases from one client to the next and helps to ensure safe working conditions

within the salon. Most states complete annual reviews and applicable updates to nail salon sanitation requirements to ensure that the standards offer the most effective approach in reducing client infection.

Education

Along with the required education needed to obtain a nail technician license, most State’s Department of

Cosmetology require all licensed manicurists, operators and manicure instructors to complete at least two hours of

sanitation education to meet continuing education requirements. These continuing education hours must be completed

prior to the expiration of the current license in order to renew the license.

Sterilizers

All nail salons are required to use sterilizers approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sanitize metal implements. For proper sterilization, the implements must first be cleaned with hot water and soap, disinfected in wet sanitizer and then sterilized with an authorized autoclave, ultraviolet sanitizer or dry heat sterilizer. Users must operate the sterilizer according to the manufacturer’s instruction to ensure proper sterilization.

Foot Spa

Nail salons that complete pedicure and other foot-related services are required to meet foot spa sanitation requirements. Under most State Cosmetology Laws, all foot spa systems must be drained, cleaned and disinfected both between customers and at the end of each day. The systems must also be drained, flushed, cleaned and sanitized every two weeks. All sanitation efforts must be recorded in a written log.

Contagions

To ensure proper sterilization and prevent the spread of disease, most nail salons are prohibited from employing a nail technician, instructor or other employee who carries an infectious or contagious disease. Check for this rule under your states’ cosmetology law. However, certain protections are afforded under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Responsibility

Though it may be ideal for each nail technician to sanitize his own implements, most states cosmetology law reads that it is the responsibility of the nail salon owner to ensure that all implements are properly sanitized and sterilized according to regulations. It is also the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the establishment maintains sanitary conditions and meets the sanitation regulations as detailed in Cosmetologists Laws and Rules book, which is updated annually.

As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus may cause nails to discolor, thicken and crumble at the edge. It can affect several nails but usually not

Developed in the early ‘80s, nail wraps are thin products made from paper, silk, linen, fiberglass, mesh, or other fabrics applied to the nail for extra reinforcement. They can be embedded within acrylics and gels or used as a natural nail coating or extension and sealed with resin.

Nail wraps have made a comeback as we continue to realize exactly what the product can do. Techs started doing overlay services, and resin and silk wraps can go well under polish. Fiberglass, also, has the same end result as dip acrylics: a stronger natural nail with longer-lasting polish. Shop Glass Glaze Now

Tip sales have been decreasing recently and the rise of soak-off gels has changed the general feeling about how nails should look and should be shaped. Many clients are generally moving toward a more natural nail and the trend is short. A lot of clients seem to be looking for a service just to keep their short nails strong and colored for longer. Nail wraps fit the bill.

The most common customer will most likely be a client who’s looking for a natural nail overlay. Nail wraps can also be used to create a bit of a tip as well, if the client’s nails are too short. Fiberglass or silk gives it a nice natural overlay without being thick and bulky.

All nail techs should revisit nail wraps because of how non-damaging they are to the nails. If a client needs some help growing out her natural nails, wraps are the perfect service.

Michael Megna, Backscratchers’ founder and CEO, recommends nail wraps for clients who are allergic to acrylic or primer, or the elderly. As well, he says it’s a common service for clients looking to extend damaged toenails during the pedicure season.

Nail wraps are also great for “transitioners,” or clients who’re giving up acrylics and want to grow out their nails. Transitioners have weaker nails and are subjected to a higher chance of breakage along the road to recovery.
When wearing acrylics, you don’t have to be too careful with your hands. If you reach for something and bang your nail, it probably won’t break. But when you’re going back to natural nails, this can be shocking. When wearing nails with an overlay, you’re going to tend to adjust to them better as they’re growing out.” Additionally, anyone with naturally weak nails or someone prone to stress cracks is a prime client for this service since nail wraps work so well on the natural nail.

Megna says he’s seen a wide range of pricing, but the most common tends to be $5 to $10 more than that salon’s acrylic pricing. “Once you get the education and perfect your skills, you can do a set in 30 to 35 minutes, but keep in mind if the system takes
longer, you need to charge for it,” says Megna.

More and more nail techs have been experimenting with nail wraps for 3-D nail art. You can lay rhinestones and other embellishments directly on the finished wrapped nail and then encase it with another layer of resin. According to Megna, you can put anything on top of fiberglass. Check out Divine Designs Nail Art

Silk wraps can be used as nail art decals. Paint or airbrush on a design, cut it out, and remove the backing. A simple layer of top coat will make the fabric transparent. This is a great activity to do in advance so you can have it ready for your client if your books are full. Paint on animal print or herringbone for a full nail decal. Nail wrap decals, especially made with fiberglass, work with regular polish as well.
Winter Nail Care Tips
Slipping on mittens is one way to shield nails from the ravages of winter. But it’s not the only solution.

Seasonal Pointers
Cold temperatures bring snowball fights, hot chocolate—and, quite often, craggy nails and cuticles.
Since winter’s dry air is especially rough on hands, it’s a good idea to have a weatherproofing plan
right at your fingertips.

Why Nails Hate Winter
Two words: moisture loss. “Healthy nails contain 18 percent water on average,” says Erin Gilbert, a
New York City dermatologist. “In winter, you’re constantly moving between the hot, dry air indoors
and the freezing temperatures outdoors. These extremes can reduce the moisture level in your nails,
leaving them dehydrated.” Dried-out nails are more likely to break, split, and chip. Compounding the
harsh climate conditions are stressors such as hot showers (water draws moisture from nails as it
evaporates from skin) and drying products, like polish removers with acetone, alcohol-based hand
sanitizers, and dishwashing liquid. Keep your nails hydrated with Nail Radiance by Backscratchers.

The Protection Plan
Intense hydration is the name of the game. Nails are made up of flattened dead cells containing
keratin, but moisturizers can make them flexible, supple, and less likely to split and break. So when
you reach for that rich winter hand cream (which you should apply after every
hand washing), get in the habit of slathering your nails, too. If you have
polish on, just massage the cream into the cuticles to help stimulate healthy nail growth. Morning and night, rub on cuticle oil.

Once a week, step things up with an intensive treatment. Soak nails in lukewarm water for no more than 10 minutes, then coat them with Nail Radiance cuticle oil and slip on cotton gloves for at least an hour.

NAILS recently caught up with Michael Megna, CEO and co-founder of Backscratchers Salon Systems and got his take on sanitation issues and the trend toward disposable products.

Is there a trend toward using disposable products in nail salons? If so, why?

Megna: Yes. With very real concerns about cross-contamination and changes in state sanitation laws, disposable items make sense for today’s salons. Advances in technology are also making it possible to manufacture many more disposable items, such as file abrasives and salon placemats.

What is pushing the trend?

Megna: While sanitation issues have been addressed in the mainstream media, we are finding that consumers are not demanding better sanitation as a result. What is pushing better sanitation are changes to state laws.

Does it seem like consumers are more aware of sanitation and disinfection issues?

Megna: Nail techs tell us that their clients are not demanding better sanitation or asking about their practices. We think there’s a general consumer awareness of these issues, but unless the nail tech promotes client awareness directly, by showing her customers what sanitation products and techniques she uses, her clients do not make much effort to ensure that a salon is safe.

What do you envision will be the future of disposable products?

Megna: Judging just from the increase in our SeptiFile Replaceable File System sales, we see it increasing exponentially. We’d like to see the industry as a whole try to develop disposable products that have a limited impact on the environment. Other industries, such as medicine, dentistry and food preparation, are also moving toward more disposable products and packaging, so we need to keep the environment in mind.

What new types of disposable products do you see being introduced to the market in the near future?

Megna: Not only will standard disposable items continue to be in demand, but we expect to see more disposable versions of implements and more single-use packaging of product.

What can salons do to compensate for the additional cost?

Megna: In some cases, disposable products are less expensive. However, replenishing salon supplies can put more financial pressure on technicians. It can drive up the price of salon services, and is likely to continue to do so. Since consumer awareness is such an important factor in sanitation, we recommend emphasizing the fact that salons must raise prices slightly to cover the additional costs of protecting their clients’ safety, or of complying with new state sanitation laws.

I say it this way because dealing with a
fungus is not fun for anyone, you or the client. If the fungus is very bad always refer the
client to a physician. Remember, we are
nail techs – not doctors. We are good
but we cannot write prescriptions; which is what is often required to treat
really out of control nail fungi. That said, Backscratchers sells a powerful organic aid in the treatment of nail fungus. Herbal Synergy is created with 3 powerful known healers, Oregano, Tea Tree oil and cinnamon oil. Herbal Synergy was designed to aid in the fight of nail fungus, naturally.

From my experience the best way to
treat the average nail fungus is to remove all artificial products. This is when the word “surviving” comes into
play. The client will not like this
idea. They want the product to remain
but the problem to go away. This
usually doesn’t happen. The best way to
treat the fungus is by applying an all natural antifungal agent directly to the
naked nail(s). Using Herbal Synergy will
help the healing process while the affected nail grows out. This can still be a long road as the nail(s)
grow, however, lack of artificial product and daily treats will indeed speed up
the process.

I can remember back when I was about 5 or 6 years old and had my first job. It was with my dad at my uncle's beauty school. My dad was a teacher at Salvatore's Beauty college, a school named after my uncle Sal who was a world champion hairstylist back in the 60s and 70s. My dad and I went to the beauty school on the weekends to clean and wax the floors. My job was to sit on the floor buffer and add a little weight so the floor would have more shine! When I was a little older, I would head over to the beauty school when I got out of school, to sit in on the freshmen classes. There, I learned how to do pen curls and finger waves!

Over the next 10 to15 years my family added 5 more beauty schools to the Salvatore's chain. We also opened 7 salons under the name of Trend Setters. Once I was older and had my driver’s license, I would work nights after the beauty school closed. I dumped trash, swept floors, stocked the shampoo and hair color, and fixed anything that was broken. I also washed and dried all the towels for the next day. This job lasted through high school and even a few years after that!

After high school, all my friends were working day jobs, while I was up snow skiing or spending time at the river water skiing. It was fun while it lasted!

I decided it was time for me to get a day job too, so I worked in a hardware store, for a lumber company and also worked for a painting contractor. I sanded my fingers to the bone one month then dug ditches for my friends plumbing company another month.

By 1983 the Megna family was deep into the beauty industry. I had an aunt & uncle with a beauty school, the Vintage Academy in Napa California. His two children were beauty school instructors. I had a cousin working for KMS and two more cousins with salons in Napa and Atlanta (the cousin in Atlanta specializes in hair extensions). And yes, I have one more cousin with daughter who just graduated from a Paul Mitchell School in Sacramento. Currently, I have over 500 combined years of beauty industry in my family.

When my dad and I started Backscratchers in 1983 he had been awarded a LIFEtime teaching credential from the California State Board of Cosmetology. This award has only been given to a handful of teachers over the years. He also still owned the beauty school – some 20 years later!

All this said, I want you to understand, I have a lot of resources, knowledge and experience in the beauty industry. I have traveled all over the world and have been mentored by some of the best men and women in this beautiful and amazing industry and I have loved every minute of it!

I am excited to give you my thoughts and answer your questions. I hope to hear from you soon.
